Aug. 14th

Last Thursday night, Dad A came up and helped me sand & spackle.

DSC_0403

This wall has taken FOREVER to level out. As you may remember, the studs behind the wall aren’t even. You could never tell with the plaster because it was all trowled on by hand. When we installed the perfectly flat sheet of 5/8″ drywall it got all bendy & wavy from the high & low spots. If we had been smart, we would have put shims behind the drywall in the low spots to even things out. We weren’t. The result has been copious amounts of sanding & spackling.

DSC_0406

Are you aware that drywall dust gets everywhere? Cause it does.

DSC_0413

This was as good as it got Thursday night. Still pretty rought, right? Yeah. We JUST finished the last round of joint compound & sanding yesterday (as in Monday the 17th).

Thursday was also spent spackling the inside of the little closet. Not the study turned walk-in closet {drool}, where we had moderate success with the plaster washers. The actual closet of the room.

DSC_0419

The cable TV wire came through the wall from the other bedroom but we’re rerouting the cable for the entire house.

DSC_0420

So I just removed it and spackled the holes.

DSC_0422

I can’t wait to show you how we did the cable! Looks about 87 trillion times better.

J.U.GS Award

No, not those kind of jugs.

Jugs

Or this kind of jugs.

milk jug

Or even these jugs.

fancy jug

Brick City Love been awarded it’s very first bloggy award – the J.U.GS Award.

JUGS_Award

J.U.GS stands for Just Us GuyS

Lily from Tapdancing in the Dark {who enjoys drunken canoe pirate adventures aboard the Salty Wench, not killing her dog, and writing nauseatingly nice things about her significant other (amongst other hilarious things)} has deemed me just one of the guys. Coming from a girl who shamelessly {dare I say, enjoys} peeing in the woods, it means a lot.

The award doesn’t come with any particular requirements or instructions but since – last I checked – I am of the XX chromatin persuasion, some justification may be in order.

Sure I can walk 3 miles in 4″ heels and describe the difference between celadon & sage {and am not really a fan of either} but I’m really just one of the guys.

  1. I’m the more handy one in the relationship. Not that Rob isn’t handy, he is. I’m just slightly more handy. I blame my father. I was learning how to sweat copper pipe at age 3.
  2. My high school graduation present from my parents was a 14.4 volt DeWalt screw gun & circular saw combo kit. It remains one of the best gifts EVER.
  3. All the power tools are mine {with the exception of one} and clearly labeled as such in sharpie.
  4. I’ve given up on getting manicures cause they don’t last 24 hours. Things need to get done without worrying about wrecking the polish.
  5. I prefer pants to dresses & skirts. I’d live in jeans if I could.
  6. Pastel colors make me puke.
  7. I don’t pay more than $20 for a haircut, including tip. {I can hear the collective gasps}
  8. My favorite show of all time is M*A*S*H.
  9. I like to build stuff {see numbers 1, 2, & 3}. I also makestuff but that’s slightly more girly.

I guess it’s not so much that I’m one of the guys, I’m just not that girly. I don’t spend hours primping or preening; my make-up routine consists of concealer & mascara. I’m not frilly or a huge fan of pink. I’m not fussy about being dirty and I certainly sweat, rather than ‘glow’. That said, tufting, luxurious bedding, & a killer pair of heels make me swoon. I’m a sucker for a good pedicure & eyebrow wax. I can sew & use a table saw. Guess I’m just that kind of enigma.

Instead of awarding this to specific fellow bloggers, I’d love to open it up for comment right here. So ladies, are you a girly girl? Just one of the guys? Or a lil-column A & lil-column B combo? Fellas – are you a man’s man? Or can you get in touch with your softer side?

The Charred Boy

A few days ago, my dear hubby had a birthday and I wanted to get him a really good present.

First you have to understand that Rob is one of the most difficult people to buy presents for.

If he wants something, he buys it. Of course we discuss big things but if he wants – say – a messenger bag, he just buys it. He is diligent about keeping a wish list online but I wanted to get him something special.

Something he’d never buy for himself but would totally love.
Something he never knew existed but, if he did, would want it badly.
Something that was just for him; not for the house, not for us. Just him.

I started pursuing the Shiver Bones Group websites.

Rob has loved their stuff since early undergrad and has quite the collection. I found the perfect thing and immediately emailed the artist. We worked out all the details and within days I had my treasure wrapped.

Here’s the unveiling. I believe the pictures say more than I ever can.

Welcome to the family Charred Boy!!

And humongous thank you to the artist, Michael Bonfiglio. He was wonderful to work with and you should immediately go check out the Shiver Bones Group (by artists Matthew Kirscht & Michael Bonfiglio). Their stuff rocks our world.

And while we’re on the subject of birthdays, look at the cute cake our parents got him –

Sneak Peek: Anniversary Pics!

Last Friday Rob & I finally had our photo shoot with my photographer friend Kamila Harris.

It was SO much fun! I didn’t even notice my 4″ heels were killing until our very last location.

After a decade of being together, we wanted some updated pictures of us in our new hometown. We shot ALL around downtown Newark. Kamila was such a sport to hike around the city with us. (We did a 2.9 mile figure-8.) If you’re familiar with the area, you may recognize some of the places.

If you head over to her blog, you can see a few.

When I get the CD with all of them, I’ll post our faves.

THANKS KAMILA!!

To the Bench, Gardent Apt.

As the summer dwindles, the list gets shorter & shorter. The garden apartment is the latest casualty on our list.

garden apt. = back burner

I know. It’s a huge bummer. The garden apartment is still on our list but it’s gotta take a backseat until after we move in.

But honestly, I’d rather not dwell on how things haven’t gone as planned. The truth is, we got A LOT done this summer. Lets not forget what it looked like when we first got the keys (not to mention the garden apartment).

All of the carpets have been ripped out, the floors were prepped & finally refinished. We’ve completely gutted the garden apartment and started putting things back together again (even the cabinets). The locks have been changed. The sound proofing is down and gone. We’ve replaced two large sections of damaged plaster with drywall & run new electric in the bedroom. We had success with the plaster washers in the closet. We started sanding the risers & patched the hole behind the front door. The wallpaper was taken off the bathroom walls & the bathroom was cleaned. The kitchen has been cleanedtwice. Initiated & added several people to the Wall of Awesome. Despite some setbacks, We even had some time for lots & lots & of fun.
(While this is most of them, this isn’t all the posts, so if you’re new feel free to scroll through the archives.)

I feel good about what we’ve accomplished this summer but we’ve only got 4 more weekends until the big M-O-V-E and I’d like our bedroom to be a drywall-dust-free-zone.

With the garden apartment on the back burner, we’re focusing on finishing up the bedroom, closet & parlor. This weekend is all about

  • Sanding joint compound
  • Spackling
  • Sanding more joint compound
  • Cleaning up all the spackle dust
  • Trying a stripper (tee-hee) on the bedroom & closet window {I’m thinking Peel-Away, unless someone would like to recommend something better{
  • Stripping some of the paint off our parlor medallion (hoping to get some of the detail back)

If this sounds like fun to you, come on down!

One of these weekends I’ll make a TO DO list that’s actually doable. Will it be this weekend?

We Started Packing

With 4 weeks until the big move, we thought we better make the most of our weeknights in the apartment.

Rob’s job moved and were throwing a bunch of the banker boxes out so we nabbed a few. And by “few” I mean 25.

This evening we filled 8 of them with DVDs.

DVDs

Yup. EIGHT bankers boxes completely full of DVDs. We’d open a blockbuster if the business model wasn’t so 1991.

We’re going to need more boxes.

My packing method is relatively simple.

  • What’s in the box is listed on the left
  • Where the box goes in the house is listed in the upper right

I also thought about numbering each box and keeping an excel sheet sheet with a precise inventory of what’s in each box. So if I ever need anything, I can check the spreadsheet & know what box it’s in. (I think I read this somewhere.) Anyone ever done this? Worth the time? Waste of time?

Got any packing &/or moving tips? I’d love to hear them! I hate moving.

New Blog Features

Since beginning on May 29, 2009 {the day we closed on our house!}, Brick City Love has grown by 75 posts. My how time flies.

With an ever increasing archive, I thought it was time to do a little house keep. If you pop out of your reader, I’d like to point your attention to a few new features.

Take a gander at the top navigation bar and you’ll notice:

  1. An updated “About” page, so new friends can get aquainted with us quickly.
  2. Blueprints – We’ve got a lot of projects going on simultaneously and I think it’s be less confusing if you had a visual lay of the land. I’m a very visual learner, so it at least helps me.
  3. “How To” – Easy, direct linkage to our more instructional posts. And I use the word “instructional” very loosely. If there’s a specific post you found particularly informative, let me know so I can add it!
  4. All our floor refinishing posts in one spot, neatly organized in chronological order. According to my blog stats, that’s what draws most of my search engine hits and I tried to make finding the relevant posts a bit easier.

Also, you can now follow Brick City Love on Twitter. I’m switching from my personal twitter account to this one, so come be my follower! I’m feeling lonely at the moment. You can read my most recent Tweets in the lefthand nav bar.

*Updated: For safety & security we’ve removed the Blueprints page. Sorry!!

Oh the Floor…

I have waffled back & forth about what to do with our basement garden apt. floor more times than I care to admit. {mmmmm….. waffles…} The decided solution was to just slap a coat of paint down and call it a day. Well I’m back to making breakfast {that too much of a reach reference?}.

The latest inspiration comes from Katie Bower‘s awesome basement reno. Drool-worthy.

Right?! Mostly because it doesn’t look like a basement and I think a lot of that has to do with the floors. The engineered hardwood they installed makes the place look like a normal living space. Not the inside of Rikers.

DSC_0185

I don’t think paint isn’t going to cut it. I have the paint. I have the ability to put down the paint. It’s the easiest solution; I’m just not sure it’s the right solution.

The goal is to rent the space out. I feel like we could get more money for it if we spend a little more on the front end to make it look as nice as reasonably possible.

This DRIcore stuff looks pretty interesting. We don’t seem to have huge (if any) moisture problems in the basement {there’s no mold or mildew} {knock on wood}. It’s a subfloor that creates “a permanent air space which keep concrete floors dry, warm and comfortable.” The reviews I read have been very positive. Plus we could lay a laminate “wood” floor right on top {how homey would that be?!}. Check out the video here.

The only thing is that the concrete floor needs to be flat. Flatness has been the bane of our existence since the very beginning but I think we have to bite the bullet. Ugh.

I’ve been researching self-leveling floor leveler. I found the following sites helpful:

Heading to Home Depot after work to take a gander at what they’ve got.

Anyone ever leveled a concrete floor? Want to recommend your favorite leveler?? Tips or tricks?

Ever used DRIcore?

Leveler & Subfloor

So many things to post about! I’ve got about 5 different drafts going right now but none of them are quite ready for primetime. BLAST!

In the meantime….

  1. Recommend your favorite below grade self-leveling floor leveler (to even out a rather wonky concrete floor).
  2. DRIcore?? Used it? Seen it? Love? Hate? Need feedback stat.

I would be forever greatful.

Can you guess what’s come up AGAIN??
