Hi, New Friends!!

On a whim I was scrolling through ye-ole-blog-stats {who am I kidding?! I check those suckers daily} and it would seem we made some new friends in the first month of this new decade.

WELCOME!! I love new friends! HI!!!!

I’m sure you’ve already checked out the “About” page but let me show you around a little personally.

See, we bought this house {our very first house!} back at the end of May 2009. Brick City Love was started the very same day.

Us & Our House

So excited to get cracking, we spent the entire summer renovating but made the mistake on focusing on practically the entire house, instead of just one or 2 projects. D’oh!

Everyone always says that renovations always take longer and cost more money than you expect, so we’re not all together suprised by the current state of our home. At the very least, we’ll have blog content for a VERY long time.

While we get aquainted, here are some of our top posts:

So click around. The 212 posts should keep you busy for a while. It’s all one giant work in progress but the master bedroom is starting to look a little more finished. Maybe by spring.

And a HUGE THANK YOU to the blogs & websites that referrer people over to Brick City Love! You rock my socks.

There’s a whole bunch that link to us but I’d like to give a special hug to my top 6 referrers.

  1. Brooklyn Limestone
  2. Tapdancing in the Dark
  3. Queasy
  4. NewlyWoodwards
  5. Five 2 Eight
  6. Russet Street Reno

You should go check them out. They’re awesome.

We’ve got big plans for 2010. We hope you’ll stick around; the more the merrier!

And don’t forget to comment! Yes, you; the lurker who’s been hiding. I love comments & feedback as much as I love all of you. You’ll make my day.

Hibernating

I’m craving Costco French bread.

Costco French bread

If that’s not one of the most random things, I’m sure the fact that I’ve had this picture on my phone since March 2009 {taken 3/15/09} is. Or maybe it’s kinda crazy. Or fat. Either way, I want it’s warm, chewy goodness.

I think it’s the weather. The cold, gray winter is triggering the instinctual urge to hibernate. Curl up on the couch {or our heated mattress pad} with a blanket, the dog, a hot cup of tea and huge hunk of bread.

Three Pork Moon Chili

I need a weekend to recoup from my weekend and maintain that a weekend that required an alarm to be set BOTH days doesn’t count as a weekend.

That said, it was a really good weekend.

The chili cook-off was a success. We won “People’s Choice” for our Three Pork Moon Chili.

People's Choice Winners

10 points if you get the reference.

It’s an incredibly rough picture of us but we were severely lacking in the sleep department {& what the heck am I doing with my shoulder?!}. We didn’t start cooking until 8:30pm Friday night. A full post with pictures and recipes coming soon!

Dia De Los Chili

It’s chili cook-off time! TOMORROW!

Back in high school, Rob & a few of this best friends entered a chili cook-off on a whim and won Best Tasting. A few years go, we started the tradition back up and have entered every year since. Some years we win something, some years we don’t. The categories are Best Tasting, Best Presentation, Best Overall, & Crowd Favorite.

Last year was a winning year.

I’m Not Looking

This is not me continuing to look for master bedroom bedding.

Bedding Overload

With the headboard nearing completion, a bed skirt to match, the curtains installed & gliding like buttah, a rug shagaliciously underfoot, bedside tables being sidetables, and the DVD clutter cleared away there is only one major thing left to do in the bedroom.

Bedding. {Well, technically bedding & lighting but I’m not thinking about lighting yet.}

Much like the overwhelming tidal wave of dishwashers, my head is swirling with bedding options. Thank you for your honest comments about my previous bedding idea.

MB idea board

For those that love it, it’s a print called “Bettina”, discontinued from Pottery Barn. There’s a few sellers that have it on eBay but I’ve yet to pull the trigger.

I like it. I honestly really really really like it. Rob likes it. But I don’t know if I LOVE it. I’m not sure it works with the room. I can’t quite put my finger on it but, for whatever reason, I’ve yet to commit. That hesitation leads me to believe – however lovely – Bettina might not be right for our room. It might be but maybe not.

See? I’m waffling. I’ve scoured websites upon websites looking at everything from duvet covers to quilts. So far I’ve looked at the ENTIRE bedding categories on:

  1. Pottery Barn
  2. Restoration Hardware
  3. Crate and Barrel
  4. CB2
  5. Amazon {that took forever}
  6. Overstock
  7. Bed Bath & Beyond
  8. Linens-n-Things
  9. Horchow
  10. Design Public
  11. Dwell Studio
  12. Anthropologie
  13. Urban Outfitters
  14. West Elm
  15. Z Gallerie
  16. Target
  17. IKEA
  18. Macy’s
  19. Nordstrom
  20. Sears
  21. JCPenny
  22. Kohl’s
  23. Ebay
  24. Etsy

I’m nothing if not thorough.

Unfortunately, the only thing I’ve managed to accomplish is be even more undecided than I was before. Nothing on the 2 dozen websites screamed BUY ME!!!!! So I’m taking that as a sign. The active bedding search is on hold.

See, 3 days after Rob & I started dating a friend {Tepp} asked me about “us” and me ~ being the too-cool-for-school 16-year-old that I was ~ replied “Whatever! It’s not like I’m going to marry him or anything.”

So I’m not going to look. Instead, I’m switching strategies to an actively passive search. My energies will be focused on other projects and things that need to get done {like this pesky no-so-little “capstone” project for my masters}. Hopefully in my travels, when I least expect it, I’ll happen upon the perfect fit that we’ll love forever. It seemed to work so far.

If you think you have the perfect duvet/comforter/quilt, please share! I’d love for it to compliment the painting that we have above the mantel {feel free to ignore the weird dark green grate. Stripping the paint off of it is on the TO DO list}.

The Shape of Things to Come

Super deep tufts

I spent ALL weekend working on the headboard.

Literally Friday night, from 8am-6:30pm Saturday, from 10:30am-12:00am Sunday.

The headboard is basically 2 different pieces that will fit together – the frame & the upholstery. The frame needed significant modifications and the wood backer for the upholstery needed to be cut to fit in the frame. Friday, I started to modify the frame and cut out the pegboard for the upholstery. I quickly realized I did not have the right tools for the job. I bought a jigsaw when we very first moved into the apartment but over the last 3 years, it’s disappeared. We didn’t move it to the house and for the life of me I have no idea where it went. Luckily it pretty cheap {$30ish}, so it’s not a huge loss.

Saturday began with an early morning, unsupervised trip to Home Depot. Danger, Will Robinson. Danger. I came with some supplies {wood, screws, etc} & a few new toys!

  • Scrolling jig-saw {why buy a fixed blade when it can scroll?!! least expensive one in the store but the laser doesn’t seem to be aligned properly}
  • Electric staple gun {upgrade!}
  • Cheap cordless jig-saw-like thing from Black & Decker that was on clearance for $19 {I’ve since used it & merely say, “Meh. Not great but it’s really light might come in handy for something.”}
  • Pair of lightweight saw horses {Finally a work surface other than the floor & back porch railings! Lightweight means I can easily get them up & down the stairs, plus they were way cheaper than something more heavy-duty. So far so good.}
  • Tool organizer/carrier {So my most used tools finally have an assigned seat that I can drag around the house. Running up & down the stairs every time I forget something is for the birds.}

The rest of Saturday was spent working on modifying the frame and making the wood backer for the tufted part. I knew the upholstery was going to take a while and succeeded in getting all the wood stuff done and ready to go Saturday. I felt victorious vacuuming up the sawdust in time to get ready to go out Saturday night.

Sunday was all soft-goods all day. Fabric, foam, batting, buttons. The prep work took significantly longer than any of the tufting. I’m still not done but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I have 4 more columns of tufts to do, then all the finishing upholstery.

I’ve never done diamond tufting before and referenced this post on apartment therapy several times. They say the stool project that’s featured is a “good starter project” because there’s only 10 buttons & 3 diamonds. “HA!” I say, “Ha!!” My headboard has 27 buttons and 14 whole diamonds {not including the half diamonds around the edges}.

I guess I was never really one for “starter projects”. Heck, have you seen the house we bought?! I’m more of a “figure it out as you go” kinda DIYer. Why waste time with diddly projects when you can just jump right in?

While I’m not done, I can honestly say that the actual tufting isn’t that hard. What tripped me up the most was figuring out how to lay things out. With diamond tufting, you have to allow extra fabric for the part that goes down into each button, so you add 3″ in each direction. {I’ll explain exactly how I did it when I post my “How To”.}

Once I wrapped my brain around the scaling up of the pattern, I found that the height I needed was RIGHT.AT. width of the fabric. I repositioned the middle 2 columns 3 times before it was centered correctly on the fabric. 1″ higher or lower and I wouldn’t have enough fabric to wrap around the edges of the frame.

And I was trying to piece together 2 pieces of fabric! See I needed 2-2/3 yards fabric to tuft the headboard. I didn’t buy enough the first time {d’oh!} and when I went back to get more they only had 2 2-yard pieces left. It all worked out though. You’d never know it was 2 pieces if I hadn’t of told you.

So that – in a really long post – was my weekend. And if you got through this giant wall of text, consider THIS me planting a big sloppy wet kiss on your cheek. {isn’t that appealing?!}

How was your weekend?? Do anything fun?

How To: Quick Shelves

I’m going to show you a never before seen corner of our bedroom.

All you real designers are going to gag at the blatant display of electronics but guess what. We don’t live in a showroom or a magazine. We like TV & watch it regularly. Some of my favorite Saturdays are the ones where we laze in bed and blow through a season of Tru Blood or Big Love {or M*A*S*H, if I’m home alone}. {Speaking of which, lets netflix the complete series of Are You Being Served? next. I used to love that show.} So, for us, a TV in the bedroom is a must.

DSC_0429

{Is that Verdi I see? Why yes! Yes it is.}
Verdi

But as a result, DVDs tend to pile up next to our TV and on the mantel {apparently, right next to the pita chips}.

DSC_0364

To remedy that, I made a couple quick shelves last night out of some leftover 1/2″ plywood and a few screws for an under-utilized ~ rather hidden ~ corner.

DSC_0372

Out of the leftover piece of plywood, I cut 2 rectangles a little smaller than a DVD case {about 7.5″w x 4.5″h}. I wanted the shelves to almost look like they were floating. Then I cut 2 back supports that’s about 7.5″w x 1″h and 2 side pieces about 3.5″w x 1″h. Nothing’s super exact but they’ll be mostly hidden, so who cares if my edges are a little wavy.

DSC_0379

First I pre-drilled 2 holes in the shelf & back support {so the wood wouldn’t split} and then screwed them together. I would use drywall screws instead of the thicker ones you see in the picture but I didn’t have any short enough on hand. Or countersink your screw heads {which would make them more flush with the top of the shelf}. Shame on me for not doing that. My countersink was right downstairs. Oh well.

DSC_0384

Then I screwed the side support to the left wall at least 1/2″ away from the back wall.

DSC_0397

The back support {with the shelf already screwed to the top of it and resting on the side support} then got screwed into the back wall.

DSC_0395

DSC_0355

Paint the same as your wall & your done!

DSC_0351

Two shelves literally took a couple hours start to finish {with 2 coats of paint}.

DSC_0364

They’re not the prettiest things. Ok… it’s a little rudimentary, slapdash, sloppy, I’ll even give you ugly. BUT!!! Add some DVD’s and all that is completely hidden!

DSC_0448

Voila! All gone. Ugly shelves completely hidden with floating DVDs.

DSC_0451

And from the bedroom doorway, you can’t see anything at all.

DSC_0417

That’s a win.

Master Bedroom Ideas

The bedroom & closet are coming together.

In fact I was planning to blog our big Elfa reveal over at Glocally today but that doesn’t look like it’s happening. Early next week {Mon/Tues} seems a little more realistic. So if you’re holding your breath for that, you might want turn blue. Sorry!

I’ve been a little side-tracked thinking about the finishing touches for our bedroom. Namely, our bedding.

See, back when we lived in the apartment, we had a red comforter set that we picked up on super sale at Khols {I think???}. Back in 2008 I hosted a bachelorette party that was colored in teals, greens, & deep purples. With only 700 sqft, the bedroom was bound to be seen and even used. Obviously a red ~ almost maroon ~ comforter just wasn’t going to do. So I made {well, actually Mom made it b/c I was running out of time} a duvet cover out of the same dark teal fabric I was using on the buffet {IKEA sheets to be exact}. Budget friendly!!

That temporary teal duvet made out of cheap IKEA sheets has been on our comforter EVER SINCE. And it’s been awesome. It’s held up great, it’s easy to take off & wash but I’m just ready for a change.

So far, we’ve been picking things for the room that are relatively neutral. The curtains, bedskirt, and shag rug are all in the off-white/ivory/cream family. I love how the different textures create dimension and interest but it’s not busy. It’s certainly left us lots of options for bedding and that was kinda the point.

The wall color is a cool neutral {Benjamin Moore’s Quiet Moments, to be exact}. It’s not definitely blue or green or gray, rather a combo. Different light brings out different shades. I’ve tried several different accent colors and haven’t really found one that really fights.

Our darker wood floors are in a similar tone to our dressers, actually. And – again – go with whatever.

So far, we’ve created a room that’s got a lot of texture and layers but no real strong color. I want color. Don’t get me wrong, I love what we have so far!! I think it’ll be a great foundation to grow with and I really wouldn’t change anything.

While I was originally planning to keep the bed really neutral and layered with texture on the white-light tan side of the spectrum, I’ve changed my mind. The bed gets color. Which color??

I’m drawing most of my inspiration from one of my favorite paintings.

crutch painting

It’s looking a little dark in this picture but you get the idea. You may remember that back when we were choosing paint for the bedroom, I pulled it in to see if it’d work with the colors. Well it’s the perfect size & shape for the space above our mantle & a piece I love to look at every day.

One of my dearest friends painted it while she was in art school. When she packed up to move out-of-state, she said I could have it. I love the colors, texture and ~ most importantly ~ the meaning & story behind the subject. It’s one of my most treasured pieces. If there were a fire, I’d probably save this piece before I saved my doll molds. And if you know me – that’s HUGE. {Of course the molds are metal and would probably survive a fire just fine. Not that I’ve thought about this or anything…}

So whatever bedding we choose, it’s got to work with this painting. Preferably pulling out the oranges because I LURV me some orange!

What do you think of this one??

MB idea board

It’s got the blues & oranges, like the painting. The pattern is busy enough to hide whatever dust & dirt the dog might bring up on his paws. I think it works. Do you??

I’ve still got to find an overhead light to replace the bare bulb I stare into daily but we’ll get there. Suggestions are welcome!!

Do you do neutral bedding? Or go wild & crazy? Think it’s weird I’m considering a print that has bugs on it? Or are they just perfect?
