Thank you! And a Poll.

Thank you for your lovely comments this week! Between the radiator & final reveal of our master bedroom, we’re simply blushing.

master bedroom wide angle

I don’t have a big post for today. I’m spent after yesterday’s whopper. Sorry!

But we do have a few things in the works, so stay tuned!

  1. Pillowcase tutorial {super easy!!}
  2. Medallion for our closet light
  3. The final diamond tufted headboard “How To’s” {here’s round 1, in case you missed it}

In the meantime, we’ve been asked, “What’s next!??”

To be honest, we’re not sure. What do you think we should do next?

{For those of you in a reader, you may have to pop out to the actual site to see the poll}

We love to hear your thoughts!!

Thanks again for all the love! If I could reach through the computer screen and hug each & every one of you, I would.

The Master Bedroom

Hope you’re settled comfortably in front of your computers. Got some coffee? Little nosh? This is going to be an especially long post.

Ready? Lets do it.

If you’re feeling like the master bedroom and walk-in closet are the only things we’ve talked about on this blog since September, you’d be mostly right. Aside from buying a dishwasher, our Christmas cards, and a few bouts of entertaining, it’s been all bedroom {& closet} all the time. This won’t be the last bedroom post; we’ve still got that headboard tutorial to finish and a few other How To’s but the wait for a completed room is over.

First, lets take a trip down memory lane.

When we closed, the future master bedroom looked like this –

Sage green walls with peachy beige-ish tan trim and RED red painted wood floors.

Lovely, isn’t it?

Over the summer, all the floors were refinished. We replaced the badly damaged plaster with drywall {which took immense amount of spackling & sanding and spackling & sanding, etc…}, primed & finally painted. For a refresher on that saga, check out this post. As part of that, we also added & moved some electric outlets.

I’m still working out what to put on top of the tall dresser. I think a lamp, a place for our spare change and some decorative items would be ideal but for now part of my doll mold collection calls that space home. They’ll probably eventually move but I like to leave a little room to grow & change.

The pillowcases I made from fabric found at Halsey St. Fabrics. It cost $4/yard & each pillowcase took 1 yard {“How To” to come!}. The Kramare bedside lights were $9.99 at IKEA. I made the bedside tables back in October out of a couple magazine organizers and frosta legs.

Secret Project Revealed!!

The waiting is over, my friends! The project that began on a snow day was finished on a snow day.

We’ll get to the reveal but first, a little inspiration.

My friend Thalla was poking around a bookstore and stumbled on a book that she knew I’d love.

restoring a house in the city

Restoring a House in the City by Ingrid Abramovitch was immediately purchased from Amazon.com and poured over the day it arrived. It was that day I saw these pictures:

DSC_0055

What popped out at me were the bright red glossy radiators.

I’d been struggling with how to paint our bedroom radiators. They looked like this:

DSC_0415

Yick. Obviously they were white at some point but desperately needed to be repainted. White? Cream to blend with the curtains? BM’s Quiet Moments to blend with the wall color? Silver?

NOPE!!

orange radiator
Pumpkin Orange.

And a quick shout-out to Frank! When I gave hints about our secret project, Frank guessed that we were putting orange covers on our steam radiators. You were SO close. Great guess!

The process for painting the radiator was simple but very time consuming. First, it needed a really good wire brushing.

DSC_0555

Rob ended up using several different sized wire brushes. The big one on top & a more medium-sized one for the outer parts and the little narrow ones you see at the bottom of the frame for getting in between the sections.

After the paint was scraped off, we vacuumed and wiped it down with wet rag. When it was all clean, we started painting.

DSC_0561

One section at a time. Back & front. Front & back. Front and front again. It took 4 coats of Glidden’s Pumpkin Patch in high gloss enamel. This Old House says you should use oil based paint for painting radiators but a book we own called “We Got Steam Heat!” {highly recommended, btw} says latex or oil based is fine {p. 112}. The temperature of the radiator won’t go about 220 degrees F and that’s well below regular paint’s melting or igniting point.

pumkin orange radiator

I never thought we’d be finished with it. Each coat (front AND back) took 4 hours. FOUR HOURS. {I may have only done the back twice, so don’t look too close at the back.}

orange radiator

And yes I took the painting to the store with me so that I could find the orange that best coordinated. It is the accent color in our bedroom, after all.

Secret shopping

And there you have it!

Not 24 hours after seeing those pictures, a decision was made and the first coat of orange hit the metal. I guess when something feels right, it’s pretty easy to pull the trigger.

orange radiator

So are we crazy for painting our radiator orange? Or does it a wonderfully fun pop of color? Have you painted anything recently a wild or unexpected color?

Snow Day #2!!

bruce in snow

Today, Newark got pounded with more snow. I’m sure my brother in Alaska is laughing at our measly accumulation but, for New Jersey, it’s a lot. Work closed and I, for one, am grateful for another snow day. I love snow days. Of course it puts me behind a little but I’ll catch up. There’s just something magical about an unexpected free day. I almost want to make snow angels or have a snowball night. Instead, I’ve stayed mostly tucked up indoors.

The secret project is finished. It seems fitting that what was started on a snow day is finished on a snow day. I’ve also mounted a medallion and the closet light fixture, put the clean clothes away (no more IKEA bags to trip on!) and started to clean the bedroom. All steps to FINALLY finish one room in the house. OMG you guys! We’ll actually have a room done. Like DONE done. Well, with maybe a few decorative details left but lets leave room to tweak, shall we? Great.

Now, back to wrangling those dirty socks & finally trying out our new duvet. Stay warm!

Quick Tip: Vase turned Trashcan

The last time we were at IKEA, I was looking for a trashcan for the bedroom and completely underwhelmed with the selection. Everything was just so trashcan-y looking.

As we followed the pre-determined path to the exit, we strolled through the plant department.

There I found this large white glass vase/plant pot –

vase turned trash can

The PERFECT size for a bedroom trashcan and much prettier. We’ve used it since early October & so far it’s working great!

I liked that is was a different material than your typical trashcan but still totally cleanable if something sticky got spilled in it. You can’t scrub baskets like you can glass. So far, there’s been no chipping and the white totally works with the room’s decor.

Similarly, recycling bins can be used to presort laundry.

dirty clothes bins

I didn’t go to the store specifically to buy recycling bins. Instead, I went shopping for a solution that would allow me to presort laundry into specific loads. Something stackable would be ideal for the space we had to utilize. I happened on the stacking recycling bins as I wandered through the aisles.

Sure products are marketed for a specific use (like a vase or recycling bin) but don’t limit yourself to those pre-determined uses! Think about your needs, space, and goals for a particular situation or solution. Step outside that proverbial box!

Almost There

cute dog on bed

Renovating & decorating projects shouldn’t be topping my list of priorities right now but they are. Perhaps if I make a list I’ll get it out of my system and be able to focus on more pressing matters.

Master Bedroom To Do:

  1. Install bedside lights
Which we own & are currently sitting in boxes in the box room
  2. Install overhead light
We’re currently rocking the ‘bare bulb’ look. It’s pretty klassy.
  3. Finish the secret project
About 3/4 done but the supplies are still completely strewn about the bedroom.
  4. Finalize a duvet
I recently came home with a duvet that’s might just be a possibility. After all this indecision, I’m ready to be done. And if this doesn’t work, it’s back to the Bettina.
  5. Finishing touches
Things like pillowcases & blanket for a punch of color on the bed. Photos/art for the one nook above the tall dresser.
  6. Clean
Somehow the supplies for all these little projects end up cluttering up the tops of the mantel & dressers or littered about the floor. I’m currently ignoring the dust bunny colony that’s taken up residence in the corner. I can’t take ‘after’ photos with that all about!

The end is SOCLOSE. So close. And I have so much non-house stuff to do. Bah!

Maybe this weekend. Hopefully this weekend. If I can get it all done by end of day Saturday, I could take pictures during daylight hours Sunday. Oh that would be awesome. I’m gonna try folks; I’m gonna try.

Do you have trouble prioritizing and balancing what you should be doing with what you’d rather be doing? {House stuff is so much more fun than schoolwork.} I can’t be the only one juggling a massive to do list. Right??

Keeping Up

Have you ever felt like you’ve gotten caught in a tornado and are just whirling around and around? Everything’s moving so fast; you’re just trying to keep up?

Between my day job, graduate capstone project, activities for the board of directors I sit on, social commitments, and the house stuff, I’m spinning. Dirty dishes are piling up in the sink because we haven’t had time to empty the dishwasher of clean ones. Clean clothes are sitting in IKEA bags instead of hanging neatly in our closet. I’d love to call a time-out but unfortunately that’s not an option.

This weekend was chock-full of non-house related activities. While they were wonderfully fun, we rolled right into Monday morning without much preparation or sleep. I’ve yawned 27 times since starting this post.

We’ll get back to my Headboard How To, I promise. It might not be this week, or maybe it will. If I was truly on top of things, I’d have a list of posts waiting in the wings to be scheduled. I don’t. {Please refer paragraph 1 about the ‘whirling’.}

There are projects in various stages of ‘doneness’ though! So that’s cool. I’d rather blog about DIY things than do a literature review performance measurement any day of the week. unfortunately, no one’s giving me a grade for my DIY projects. Perhaps this weekend we can catch up.

In completely unrelated news, Rob bought a Yo Gabba Gabba DJ Lance Rock hat from kids.woot.com.

Rob's yo gabba gabba dj lance rock hat

Why? Well, I suppose the answer is as simple as, ‘why not?’ And for any new readers out there, no we don’t have children, nor are we expecting any. Please tell me we’re not the only two non-parents who dig Yo Gabba Gabba.

Stacked Cardboard

I was in West Elm today and this centerpiece caught my eye. It’s just cut & stacked cardboard all glued together.

I like the texture of the edges. Wouldn’t it look cool painted? Maybe white? Or orange?

Perhaps that’s what I’ll do with all those moving boxes we still haven’t unpacked…

Pigment Swirls

You go to your local paint or home improvement store to buy paint.

After staring at the walls of swatches you finally pick one. Or maybe you brought one with you to be matched.

Either way, you hand the swatch to the guy behind the counter and tell him what finish you want.

A few minutes later he hands you back your freshly mixed paint and you’re good to go.

But have you ever seen what paint looks like after the pigments are added but BEFORE it’s mixed?

Paint before mixing

Super cool, right?! I love the swirls.
