Our Turn to Help

We’ve had some amazing friends help us with the house but we do our best to return the favor.

Some dear friends are getting married in their backyard next Saturday. Today we’re {one of several} helping to get their yard & house in tip-top shape.

My task?

Restoring this {& the coordinating white plastic chairs} to it’s original shade of clean white. And this pic was taken after it was sprayed with Lysol Bleach cleaning solution.

Sexy Legs

Remember when we drug home this lonely, deal of a chair from IKEA?

Chair in store

It’s IKEA’s Stockholm chair {we couldn’t pass up a $649 chair-and-a-half for a scant $259.60}. While it fits our two butts perfectly, I wasn’t a fan of the squat little legs.

Enter the interwebs.

After perusing multiple sites, I finally found what I was looking foron ebay. {FYI – this sellerseems to have a couple other websites where they sell the same stuff but it’s all cheapest through their ebay store.}

I ordered 8 of the 6″ tapered legs and ~ well within the amount of time the seller said ~ the package was waiting on my doorstep. In total, I spent $15.60 for the new legs & shipping.

The slipcovers promptly came off both the chair & ottoman for a quick trip through the wash.

DSC_0080

Much better.

The ottoman didn’t come with legs and the new ones easily screwed on.

DSC_0085

How cute, right?!

DSC_0087

The chair wasn’t so simple. We tried to screw the legs onto the chair but it just didn’t work.

The screw that’s in the top of the leg bottomed out in the chair frame and, instead, screwed deeper into the leg. You’d think this would be ok but it wasn’t. The leg was all wobbly.

DSC_0092

For a few weeks, it just sat. Legless. And sad.

Until we got plates to mount the legs too.

plates with arrow

Earlier this week, while the hubs was at a Yankees game, it all came together.

First, I got to buy a new drill bit index. Over the years, I’ve lost or broke bits and didn’t have one large enough for the leg screw. This 24-piece Milwaukee may be my new favorite.

DSC_0304

The 1/4″ bit seemed to be large enough but not too big. You want it to accommodate the shank but have the screw edges grab into the wood.

new screw hole

Mount the plate. {You could also mount the plate & then drill the 1/4″ pilot hole as the bit cleared the center hole fine.}

DSC_0309

Screwed in the leg.

DSC_0313

Repeat 3 more times.

DSC_0317

VOILA!!

I love how it seems to float.

Lamps : Rugs :: Moving : Camping

Been a while since you took the SATs?? Written out -> lamps are to rugs as moving is to camping.

We don’t own lamps or rugs. Both are more expensive than I think necessary. Have you ever shopped for rugs or lamps?! It’s silly. And I’m not saying the cost isn’t justified but goodness-gracious!

I bought a remnant once for my college dorm {or should I say, “my parents bought”} that moved with me to our off-campus house. Since we moved out of our college town, it’s been long gone. College parties + new puppies + aversion to vacuuming = GA – ross!! The bedroom of our last apartment was carpeted and we never quite got around for getting an area rug in living room.

In college I invested in a Sputnik lamp that I still adore. Found it at a little antique shop and just HAD to have it. It’s still my favorite. We inherited 2 silver zig-zag lamps from my parents bought for my brothers room that he didn’t like. {Oh. And we just knocked 1 of them over and it broke. So we’re now down to 1.} Other than that, we’re lamp-less. And rug-less. Our bedroom {and house in general} need both.

In my random craigslisting {it’s a verb, you know}, I spotted this.

blue hanging lamps

Before you scrunch up your nose like an 8-year-old given a plate full of brussels sprouts, take a closer look.

blue hanging lamps 1

See those little blue glass lamps hanging in the back?? They caught my eye too.

DSC_0240

$25 later {for both!}, they are now hanging in the closet on the 2nd floor. While $25 isn’t as good of a deal as Katherine’s {of BackGarage} budding lampire, I’m pretty pleased.

DSC_0242

A year ago, I wouldn’t have given them a 2nd glance. My style was much more modern & linear.

But recently, I’ve been very drawn to more & more vintage items. Don’t get me wrong! I’ve always appreciated a good piece of kitsch and I still love MCM furnishings. But there’s something about the blue glass, the curves of the petals, the sense of history & nostalgia that I’m totally loving.

DSC_0244

I think they’re going to get hung here:

DSC_0050

The Guest Bedroom Nook {which no longer has any soundproofing on it}.

This room will eventually be the Guest/Craft/Sewing/Hobby room.

Is that a lot to cram into 230 sqft? We’ll make it work.

Anyway… yes. These guys are going in the nook. Eventually.

You want to see what the color really looks like?
But that means showing you a picture with the big bad “I make pictures ugly but crisp” flash turned on!
You SURE???? Ok.
But don’t say I didn’t warn you.

{without flash}

They are sky blue in person. I’m thinking smooth white walls, crisp white trim, with plenty of storage and pops of color throughout. These will be one of those “pops.” In my mind it’s feeling very fresh and clean. Someday, my little blue lamps. Someday.

Do Your Friends Clean??

This weekend we had our very first house guests in our very first house. I consider it a very important milestone.

{In the spirit of transparency, we have had weekend guests but they didn’t stay with us. Our parents got a hotel room the Saturday of our moving weekend, so they could help get us settled Sunday. Guess they didn’t want to fight over who got the air mattress.}

Meet our very first house guests:

Megan, Gurp, & their pup Keely

We hung out but also put them to work. {How else do you get to be on the Wall of Awesome?!}

They braved the rain and came with us to retrieve the latest Craigslist acquisition.

DSC_0207

The {makings of our} headboard.

DSC_0203

Because it was raining, I brought along some cellophane wrap & painters tape. {Look at me planning ahead!} When we arrived, we wrapped the whole headboard plastic wrap & secured the open seams with painters tape before strapping it to the roof of the car. Worked pretty well, if I do say so myself.

Sunday they helped us clean the apartment. As in – mop, vacuum, wipe down baseboards, Windex, etc. Yeah, the whole shebang.  Would your friends help clean your apartment? Cause mine would. {/gloat.} Thanks Megurp!!

Goodbye Apartment

Tonight after work {& a quick trip up to Waldwick} we said our final goodbyes to our apartment.

Apt. Living Room

Apt. Bedroom
{Excuse the grainy iphone pics. It was dark & it was the only camera we had.}

Apt. Closet

Apt. Kitchen

We just had a few things left to pick up after cleaning Sunday. {Of course those “few” things took up the entire back seat plus what I carried in between my feet & in my lap.} Did our final walk through & turned in our keys

It’s been only 2 weeks but it didn’t feel like home.

Master Bedroom Paint

The master bedroom started with sage green walls, cream trim, & brick red painted floors.

master: facing back of house

Then Nick & Taline helped us remove the damaged plaster in the largest wall.

DSC_0210

Then we finally got the drop between the plaster & drywall all leveled out.

DSC_0403

A quick detour trying to strip the window moldings took a day.

DSC_0502

Then FINALLY we got to prime everything.

IMG_0111

The trim got 2 coats of crisp Behr white.

After multiple paint chips & 9 different swatches on the wall, we picked a color!!

Options

Benjamin Moore’s Quiet Moments. And without further adieu, here it is.

Headboard Hint

Headboard Inspiration

Now that the bedroom is painted {oh I still have to show you pictures of that!! soon. promise. don’t let me forget!} and we’re moved in, I’m thinking about decorating.

I’ve already got curtains figured out. They’re cream theatrical drapes. {Got the curtains for a steal but the track is going to cost my first born.} The wall color is Quiet Moments by Benjamin Moore with crisp white trim {by Behr}. Now it’s on to the headboard.

Originally I was thinking something upholstered.

Topping out at $1,950 is this gorge Jonathan Adler number. I love the height to it! So dramatic. But nearly 2K?! Srsly? HA!!

jonathan adler bed

The nearly identical Pottery Barn number is slightly better at $799.

pottery barn's york 799usd

But I’m looking something with thicker, deeper set buttons. Realistically, $800 is too rich for my blood anyway.

Have you seen Betty Draper’s headboard?? Who doesn’t love MadMen?! I love the height, the edging & lush buttons.

clubfurniturestore draper bed 1299usd

But for $1,299?! Um, no thank you.

At $649, Horchow’s Benson headboard has nice deep-set buttons at a better price. {Don’t forget the $145 additional processing & shipping charge.}

horchow's benson 649usd

For $295.75, this one from Bellacore is a much better price. It has the deep-set buttons but not as much detailing on the top as I would like.

bedroomfurnituremore skyline 472usd

Then. Just when I was set on making my own upholstered headboard with a jigsaw & some foam, I see this post from Rambling Renovators. Do you see that orangey/peach headboard??? I’ll make it easy & just post it here.

peach headboard

Drool. I LOVE the curvy wood edging. The padded inside. The orange. Too bad it’s in Ontario.

Time to take all this inspiration and make something myself. Budget?? Less than $100. Total.

Does that sound like a challenge? Cause it is.

Block Party

Last night was the first Halsey St. Block Party.

DSC_0040

I had to work & didn’t get there until later but it was really cool!

DSC_0002

The first episode of Brick City was on when I arrived.

DSC_0007

There were way more people than I expected to see there.

DSC_0006

There were vendors on the street & shops open late.

Honest Scrap

Jeannine @ Small and Chic in Cville just awarded me my second bloggy award. {The first was the J.U.G.S award.} I’m SUPER excited & honored Jeannine considers me an Honest Scrap.

It even has a hammer! That’s my kinda award. Thanks ma’am!!

So here’s the deal.

  1. Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award. {check!}
  2. Share “10 Honest Things” about myself.
  3. Present this award to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.
  4. Tell those 7 people they’ve been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.

DEAL!

My 10 Honest Things

  1. I ❤ power tools. Vroom vroom.
  2. I want our home to look amazing but not designed. A functional place that feels like home is more important than perfectly styled shelves.
  3. I believe in transparency. Brick City Love puts it all out there; half done projects, mistakes, successes, the whole lot. I love the process, not just final product.
  4. Our house is going to take YEARS to finish. But that’s ok. 🙂
  5. My favorite color is orange.
  6. I love diners. I usually order grilled cheese {as long as it’s not breakfast time}.
  7. Our dog, Bruce, sleeps in bed with us. Sometimes under the covers.
  8. I love naps.
  9. I’m looking forward to finally having something – a project, a room, whatev – be a real live 1000% done AFTER. Oh that’d be the sweet sweet smell of victory. I want an AFTER.
  10. We have the best family & friends in the entire world. Corny? Yes. True? Also, yes. Hence the Wall of Awesome {in left nav bar} {which desperately needs a little updating}.

And the “Honest Scrap” is thusly awarded to the following fellow bloggers.

  1. Russet Street Reno
  2. NewlyWoodwards
  3. BackGarage
  4. The Fourth Door
  5. DC Rowhouse
  6. Baltimore Rowhouse
  7. Northern Happenings {Not home reno but he’s my brother & living a super cool life in Alaska. Tell him to blog more.}

Holla!!
