Satin or Semi-Gloss: The Result Show

Saturday we were debating a satin or semi-gloss finish to wrap up our our floor refinishing project.

And the WINNER IS…..

SATIN!

SATIN WINS!! THAAAAAAAAA SATINS WINS!

*NOTE: The above picture is NOT of our house or floor.
(pic found here & belong to Elizpiz)

This is one of those cases where it was best with to go with the professional’s opinion. While Jon (our floor guy) gave us both options and would have put down whichever we picked, he recommended satin.

Of course I agonized over it, Googled, polled our parents, and posted here before making up my mind.

In the end, I think it’s the right call. We popped over to the house about midnight Sunday to take a peek. I forgot my camera (I know. I stink.) but, take my word for it, they.look.amazing. Oh! I didn’t tell you which color we picked. Tomorrow. I promise. 😉

The final coat of satin is going down as I type. WHEEE!!!! I’m so excited!

Bad Birdies

I swung by the house Thursday morning to peer in the front windows at our in-process floor refinishing.

While walking up to the house I looked up, thankful it wasn’t raining for a change. Then I saw this.

DSC_0093

Need a closer look?

3 little birdies

That would be at least 3 different bird’s nests taking up residence in our gutters. I’ve never owned a home before but I’m at least 90% sure gutters are for water, not bird’s nests.

Add gutter cleaning to the TO DO list.

Satin or Semi-Gloss?

The first coat of poly went down early Friday afternoon. The second coat goes down today (Saturday) afternoon. Third & final coat goes down Monday.

Now we have another dilemma. I guess it’s technically a “decision” but we’re pretty new to this whole ‘homeowner’/’make-decisions-you-have-to-live-with-for-20-years’ thing and therefore it’s a “dilemma.”

What should be our final coat of floor poly? Semi-gloss? Satin? Half semi, half satin?

Semi-gloss is going to be kinda shiny. While I hear it holds up well, I also hear it shows scratches & scuff marks more easily than saint. I kinda like the idea of shiny new floors.

Satin won’t be as shiny (duh) but it’ll also hide the natural scuff marks & scratches that will be inevitable with our lifestyle. And to be perfectly honest, I don’t like to clean. I wouldn’t say we’re slobs but there’s a reason we have a robot to do our vacuuming. His name is Francis Albert, by the way. You haven’t named your vacuum cleaner?! Well you should.

Here’s some pictures for comparison purposes.

*NOTE: The below pictures are NOT of our house or floors. Don’t judge on color; judge the sheen.

Satin finish:

If it matters, the walls will most likely be painted an eggshell finish with semi-gloss trim & moldings.

So would you go semi-gloss, satin, or a half & half mix??

{Update: We went satin.}

I think I’ve seen this making the rounds on a few different blogs. Most recently, I popped up in my reader via The Fourth Door (thanks Eva!).

Glidden is giving away a FREE QUART OF PAINT!!

Sweet.

I’ve spent the past 25 minutes trying to decide what color I want.

Do I want something to use as a test sample wall color?

Or should I get a fun accent color for a project that might only need a quart? Don’t have a project yet in mind but I’m sure something will come up!

Decisions. Decisions!

Why are you still reading this?

Go get your free paint!

Refinishing: Day 2, Progress

Day 2 of refinishing the floors is complete and visible progress has been made. Although, it does look very similar to Wednesday’s progress – LOTS OF SANDING.

DSC_0116

I stopped by the house Thursday afternoon at lunch with my coworker. There were more people working than there were yesterday. Nearly everything looked sanded.

Before (under the carpet) the floor near the fireplace in the 2nd floor back bedroom looked like this.
DSC_0770

Wednesday we had a giant hole in the floor on the 2nd floor.
DSC_0038

Thursday afternoon it was all better!

Hole = Replaced

It would have been nice to salvage the old boards but they were badly damaged. I hope staining blends the patched spots in with the original floors. But, even if it doesn’t, it’s worlds better than the old damage.

Even the scary closet

has been tamed.
DSC_0142

As of lunch, the downstairs needed to be sanded again. You can still see our stain samples.

DSC_0144

Staining was also supposed to happen at the end of the day. When I walked by after work it looked like they were cleaning up sawdust. So I’m hopeful we’re still on schedule.

Once they stain & start putting down the poly, I’m not sure we’ll be able to walk on it. Therefore in-progress pictures may be iffy. :-/

But that means you have more time to weigh in on our stain options!! If you haven’t put in your 2 cents yet, here’s a refresher.

These are the stains we’re choosing from:

Two questions:
1. Which color did we pick?
2. Which color would you have picked?

Thanks for all the comments & keep ’em coming!!

Refinishing: Day 1

Wednesday, JDL Flooring started on our house. We met with Jon, the owner, a few Saturdays ago during our big basement demo day. Our tenant hadn’t moved out yet so the 2nd story was the only floor sans covering. It was before we ripped up the laminate and he didn’t see the 3rd floor. We liked his style & demeanor. He seemed knowledgeable, reasonable, and experienced.

We did our due dilegence and contacted a few other companies. One company that came highly recommended never called me back. (Some of the junk companies didn’t call me back either. What’s with people not wanting my business??) We contacted some of Jon’s references; everyone raved.  We felt comfortable choosing him & his team and he worked to stay within our budget. Monday we agreed on a price and were told they could start Wednesday.

At 7:30am on Wed. June 24th, Lucio (Jon’s head refinisher) was waiting for us at the house. Punctuality = good first impression

van

Introduced ourselves. Gave Lucio the walk through as his son unloaded the truck.

DSC_0011

During our walk through, we realized most of our lightbulbs are burned out. Huh.

We showed Lucio where are circuit breakers are. He popped out 2 of the breakers and plugged in a massive extention cord. He said the sanders have their own breakers and this way they won’t constantly loose power.

With that, they got to work.

first passes of the sander

After a few minutes of them sanding, Rob & I weren’t sure what we were supposed to do. Should we stay? Should we go? We decided to leave and went to tell Lucio. He asked us to wait a minute and showed us what was under the paint.

lots of filler

That, my friends, would be filler. Lots & lots & lots of white plastic (latex, maybe??) filler. Jon doesn’t use filler, which was one of the reasons we chose him. We wanted the floors to be authentic and original. And, frankly, filler looks like crap. BUT it seems someone didn’t share my sentiments.

Lucio did a quick test for us using ebony stain to see if it covered it up. The filler absorbed some of the stain but not nearly as much as the wood (which I suppose is to be expected). Huh.

ebony

He said he’d sand more and do some sample swatches of different stain options for us to choose from.

Then it was off to work for us and they got busy.

That afternoon, I met Jon back to the house. Lucio was still there working.

They’re going to replace it today with new stuff (can’t find any reclaimed; boo.) but it was neat to see the structure underneath.

They ran out sand paper, otherwise the 3rd floor would have been sanded too.

They RAN OUT OF SANDPAPER. That’s how many layers of awful were on our floors.

Lucio also left us stain samples to choose from:

Floor Prep

The floor refinishers started bright & early this morning but yesterday evening was spent prepping for their arrival.

Sure we spent almost all day Saturday tearing up carpet & flooring. And yes, we had all the trash hauled away Monday. So it seemed like Saturday should just be a quick little walk through to make sure everything was good to go.

Not quite.

*Note, you should know we are dog sitting for my parents, so there are a couple new furry faces in these pics. Meet Jovi (in blue) & Phoebe (red):
DSC_0419

They appreciated our window being so low to the ground with a perfect view of the sidewalk.

Bruce didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

DSC_0417

The view was so yesterday’s news for him.

Meanwhile, I removed the pocket doors.

DSC_0348

(yes, by myself)

DSC_0349

I noticed that the doors have these roller things on the bottom of them.

DSC_0356

The previous owner took the track up when he laid the laminate and said it was tucked inside the pocket. I didn’t look for it but perhaps it’ll shed some light on how the rollers work.

Taking the doors out wasn’t hard.
DSC_0388

I pulled them completely out of the pocket.
DSC_0390

Then pulled the bottom of the door toward the back wall, stood inside the window, & pushed the bottom away a little more. It slipped out of the top track pretty easy. Obviously I had my hands full, otherwise I would have taken a picture.

JOVI!
DSC_0377

Then it was on to the scary closet.

scary closet

The flash doesn’t make it seem as scary, but I assure you it was.
DSC_0436

Historically, I have had VERY bad luck with rodents & fabric. It’s a long story, perhaps for a post this afternoon or evening. The giant drop cloth wadded up, forgotten in an old closet seemed like the perfect place for something awful to hide.

It wasn’t so scary afterward.
DSC_0446

In the closet, I found mostly junk. Old paint, just in case we ever needed to touch up that wonderful red paint:
DSC_0581

But I did find a brand new paint pole:
DSC_0577

With the price tag still on it:
DSC_0579

Sweet!

I moved that and all our tools leftover from Saturday down to the basement so they were out of the way.

Bruce & Jovi liked the open window,
DSC_0463

but poor Phoebe was not feelin’ the stairs.
DSC_0467

We worked on “Sit” & “Stay” so I could take some dog-free “Before” pics.

Need a locksmith?

The previous owner wasn’t living in the house when we closed. While they lived here when they first bought the place, it’s been rented out to various college kids for the past 5 years. We got a whole wad of keys at closing but, with so many people living here through the years, you never really know who’s keys still worked.

DSC_0004

So last Friday, before we headed to Lowes (where Rob found his latest toy), Arthur came by.

Arthur, The Locksmith, that is.

Old Lock

We were going to change the whole knob & lock but, according to Arthur, the lock is original & mortared into the door. The knob was retrofitted to work it. It’s not pretty but it’s solid and staying. (We can work on aesthetics when we redo the front of the house.)

DSC_0012

So, instead of changing them to something pretty, we just re-keyed them.

Arthur & his truck were broadsided a week ago, so his truck’s in the shop. He wasn’t happy to have to work out of a rental truck but did a wonderful job!

Arthur

All done!!

freshly keyed door

Arthur apologized for not being able to make more copies (which he could have if he’d had his truck) but we honestly didn’t mind. The hubs wanted special keys for the front door:
DSC_0051

YANKEE KEYS!!!

We bought enough to give to our parents* copies.

Yankee's Keys!!
*Our Phillies fan parents. Tee-hee. 🙂

Before Arthur left, he gave 2 magnets; one to keep & one to give to a friend. So I’m giving it to you.

Arthur's Magnet

If you live in Newark & need a locksmith, call Arthur. He’s very nice, reasonably priced, and knew what he was doing. He came out within an hour after I called and had everything done pretty quickly. Highly recommended!

Review: 1-800-Got-Junk?

Between the 2 rooms of carpet I tore up a couple weeks ago and Saturday’s flooring fest, we have a huge amount of debris in the form of carpet, carpet tiles, and laminate “wood” flooring. Of course there were also 7 black trash bags in the basement that the garbage men refused to take because they were full of “renovation material.” Apparently the great city of Newark wants nothing to do with your renovation trash. They’ll either ignore the bags and leave them sitting on the curb or – worse – write you a citation. Luckily (I guess) they decided to just ignore the 5 bags of drywall from our kitchen wall demo. While I was slightly annoyed they weren’t picked up, it was certainly better than getting a ticket.

We basically had 2 options; rent a dumpster or call a junk removal place. After doing a little price comparison, junk removal won. Even for a full load, it wasn’t much more than renting a 10-15yard dumpster. Plus they came, loaded it up, and hauled it away – no lifting or permits required.

I called several places Monday morning but got mostly voicemail. I described our debris to the one place that did answer their phone and they quoted me $580 total (including tax) and could come Tuesday. To put that quote into some perspective, the one dumpster rental place I called quoted me at $625 for a 15 yard dumpster.

None of the other 4 junk removal places I called answered their phone or returned my called. Perhaps they’ll get back to me eventually but we really wanted this stuff gone TODAY (well, Monday). Snooze you loose, bud.

After getting the $580 quote, we decided to go with 1-800-Got-Junk. They are franchised across the country and seem to get rave reviews online. Their prices started at $136 and maxed out at $678 for a full load. I wasn’t sure what percentage of a trunkload we had but I was pretty sure it wasn’t a full load and most likely less than a 3/4 load ($576). It was therefore the cheapest and, perhaps more importantly, they could be there TODAY! Their website as a pretty nifty load calculator thing; check it out.

Now for the review:

At 12:15pm, I booked online for pick-up between 4-6pm, their latest time slot. After filling out all the other information, I submitted my request and got a confirmation email back. The confirmation email said the truck team “will call you 15 to 30 minutes before this two-hour promise window to confirm their arrival time.” Sure enough, at 3:33pm my phone rang. He said they were running early and could actually be there 10-15 min before the schedule appointment time, if that was alright. It wasn’t a problem, so I headed over to the house.

The truck arrived about 3:50pm; the gentleman introduced themselves. They were wearing the uniforms you see in all advertisements and both guys were pleasant and courteous.

(Please excuse the less than stellar pics. I forgot to grab the real camera before leaving home today and had to make due with my trusty iPhone.)

We did a quick walk through; I showed them the goods.

IMG_0370

After the walk-through, I was told we had at least 1/3rd ($339) of a trunk load but no more than 3/8ths ($386) (plus tax). I was comfortable with paying for 3/8ths, so I told them to load it up and get it gone.

For the next 25-30 minutes, I stood on the sidewalk and chatted with our neighbor while the 2 guys hauled stuff out the front door:

And tossed out of the 2nd & 3rd story windows (with my permission) & squarely into the truck:

And OUT the window it came!

IMG_0374

At about 2/3rd’s complete:

IMG_0383

Less than a half hour later, the truck was loaded.

I was told we really had 3/8th of a load but he’d only charge me for 1/3rd. Most excellent.

I gave them my credit card number (they took everything but Discover) and was given a receipt, plus some coupons for $10 off future services.

Sure, it’d be awesome if the city would take that kind of trash for free but they don’t. Kinda a bummer but this was the next best thing.

In total, we spent $339 + $23.73 tax = $362.73. MUCH cheaper than renting a dumpster or the other debris removal guy and I didn’t have to go deal with getting a permit. It was a very quick and enjoyable experience. PLUS!! I didn’t have to lift a finger. I would totally use them again and recommend them to others.

1-800-Got-Junk?

WE HAVE A DEBRIS FREE HOUSE!!!! You have no idea how exciting that is.

(And you wanna hear a secret?? The floor refinisher has been selected and he starts Wednesday morning! Shhhh!!!)
