Moving Day

Last Saturday was the big day.

DSC_0588

Boxes were {mostly} packed. The UHaul was reserved. Friends were scheduled. Of course not everything goes as planned.

14' uhaul

They didn’t have the 17′ UHaul we reserved, so we had to settle for the 14′. Turns out the 17′ wouldn’t have been enough space anyway. We had to make 2 trips. The first included all the boxes, some furniture & the garden apartment appliances that had been sitting in our dining area for the entire summer.

Carrie & Chris

Secondly, we learned that either September 19th is a very popular day or we’re not that popular with our friends & family. I won’t disclose the number of people who ended up not being able to come because I truly feel that most of them would have come if last minute things hadn’t popped up. I don’t want them to feel bad; we still love them. {It was a lot.}

DSC_0594

We did, however, have our parents & 2 amazing friends help the entire day. They were even all on time!! For friends & family who have to drive 1.5hrs+ to get to Newark, showing up at 8:30am to schlep some boxes & furniture is no fun feat.

the boys

So a HUGE GIANT AMAZING SLOPPY WET KISS to Chris & Skip {& our parents!}. They totally rocked it. I think we’re now committed to naming our first born after them. Yes, all 6 of them.

Things We Learned:

1. Get a truck way bigger than you ever think you’ll need. Or maybe this is just for us because we have more stuff than most families of 4.
DSC_0589

2. If at first the queen box spring doesn’t fit, get a bigger hammer.

box spring

Or more people, so to speak. It gouged the hall wall but luckily in an area that still needs to be spackled & painted. No biggie. The mattress was also a uber tight squeeze but at least it flexed a little.

wrestling the mattress

Nothing larger than a full will ever be going to the 3rd floor again. A queen would probably fit on the 2nd floor ok. A king size bed will never have the opportunity to darken our doorstep. /tear.

3. Small boxes are the way to go but wardrobes are pretty clutch too.

4. Just because there’s an outlet, doesn’t mean it’s hooked up to anything. Or even secured to the wall.
outlet
So that’s why the light wasn’t working!

5. A homemade lunch {such as MomMom’s meatballs} goes a long way as payment for a long day’s work.

Our sincerest thanks to our parents, Chris & Skip. We could not have done this without you. Srsly guys. You rock.

{thanks to my Mom for taking all these pictures!!}

K & S Auto Glass

Today was all about productivity; hence the late post.

After our downer of a welcome, fixing the window became top priority. Yesterday I called around to a few different local places and got a quote from Safelite {the chain our insurance works with}. Safelite came in at $189.95 +tax for consumer non-claim repairs. {Our deductible is $500, so filing an insurance claim wasn’t worth it.}

I also called B&B Auto Glass on McCarter Hwy. They came in at $140+tax. They had a pleasant enough phone manner. Finally I called K & S Auto Glassworks. Found a great review & 10% off coupon online. The $129 +tax quote came in the lowest anyway. They had an open 7:30am appointment Tuesday morning. We had a winner.

I got out the door late and didn’t end up making it to K&S until closer to 7:50 this morning.

Pretty unassuming from the outside.

K & S Autoglass

Getting an early appointment was apparently an excellent idea. There wasn’t anyone else waiting; my car was taken back right away. The guy really seemed to know what he was doing. The window was installed & he even popped the weather stripping/trim back into place.

DSC_0652

I was out the door by 8:10 and to work on time. In total, it cost us $130 {including the glass, a kit thing, something else, & the discount}. I would TOTALLY recommend them. They were quick, professional, and competitively priced.

sans window glass after

We’ll see how it holds up but I have very high hopes. It was a very pleasant way to end a not-so-pleasant experience.

Bad News First

We are officially moved. While we still have to go back & clean the apartment before our final walk-though, we are out of there. The weekend had its good & bad moments. The good far outweighed the bad but I’m a “bad news first” kinda person, so we’re going to start with that.

1. We have no internet or cable. While we ran the cable    for the entire house, it needs to be hooked up outside to the box. The box for our row of homes resides behind a locked fence, complete with barbed wire on the top. Now we have to find out who’s in charge of side fence and when it will/can be open{ed}. Tonights premiere of Brick City?? Yeah. Don’t have cable and therefore cannot watch it. Booooooooo.

2. Our car got broken into. We moved the car down the block to make room for the moving truck early Saturday afternoon. Sunday afternoon we went to put some Home Depot return in the trunk and saw this.

car

No, we don’t usually leave our windows down.

DSC_0630

Nor do we make a habit of sitting in shattered glass.

DSC_0659

Nearest we can tell, it was my black zippered top makeup bag that lured them in. My freakin’ MAKE-UP BAG!I’d show you a picture of it but ~ oh that’s right! ~ they stole it. It was sitting right on the passenger seat. And it’s not like I wear expensive make-up. Hope you like L’Oreal & Cover Girl, cause there was nothing better than that in the bag.

DSC_0640

While my make-up is equivalent to that of a 13 year old, they did snag our Garmin & satellite radio {both of which were chillin’ in the glove compartment}. That kinda sucks. Especially since we’ve entered the 1.5 months per year when I start to spend more time in the car than the office.

DSC_0640

The purely rational side of me recognizes that it’s just stuff. Stuff that can be easily replaced. Nothing sentimental, personal, confidential or identifying was taken. But it is unsettling. It happened ON OUR STREET. Lesson learned. NOTHING stays in the car.

DSC_0655

We filed a police report and I’m calling the insurance company today. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Raymond Jewelers

All this renovating & painting left my engagement & wedding rings pretty skuzzy. They were covered in paint & grime.

Raymond Jewelers

A quick 5 minute trip into Raymond Jewelers & $3 later, my sparkly friends were back to sparkling. They did a nice job. Quick, easy, & cheap; just how I like it. 😉

Moving is like Camping

I don’t make fancy dinners. In fact, we order in more than we probably should. But tonight I was just in the mood for some noodles. Seems simple enough. We have pasta. It’s sitting right on the counter.

Packed Orzo

Minor problem. No pot. They’re all packed in boxes taped shut.

Make-shift pot

So I improvised.

Boiling pasta

Pasta plus random cheese in our fridge drawer = highly mediocre mac & cheese.

Impromptu mac & cheese

It was edible but barely. Next time I’ll just go for buttered noodles.

Count down to the move? T-minus 2 days.

Brick City on Sundance

Last year Sundance came & filmed a 5-part special series about our city. Last night was the premier here in Newark but I was unable to attend any of the screenings. {major bummer} Ninapilar posted about it on Glocally though.

I will be catching it the premier Monday, September 21st on the Sundance Channel, just like you.

Brick City

Check out the exclusive excerpt from Episode 1.

I’m excited to see it. We’ve only been Newark residents for 3 years, so we’re still relatively new. I don’t know what to expect from the series. I hope it’s honest but uplifting.

For more information {& video clips}, check out their websitetwitter.

So find out what channel Sundance is on your cable box and join me next Monday night ~ September 21st ~ at 10pm.

Then either comment here or tweet at me and let me know what you think.

Second Chance

Last time we came to Baltimore, Melissa & Justin introduced us to Second Chance, a nonprofit architechtural salvage organization. They have four warehouses full of salvaged doors, windows, light fixtures, railings, hinges, furniture, and more. We’re like kids in a candy store.

Here are some of our favorite things we found from our trip this weekend. None of it came home with us but it was fun just to look.

Baltimore Bound

Bright & early this morning I packed up the car & headed south. Sunday is Melis & Justin’s wedding {congrats guys!!}, so posting will be light until we’re home.

It poured the entire drive down & is still coming down pretty good. Luckily the forecast is looking sunny for Sunday.

Cool Dog Bed

Yesterday BagelPower posted about these dog beds from Molly Mutt and I had a major DUH moment {as in “why didn’t I think of that?!”}.

molly mutt

You fill their mesh stuff sack with old textiles {clothes, towels, pillows, blankets, etc.} that are no longer useable.

molly mutt stuff sack

Zip it up and put a duvet cover on it.

molly mutt bird on a wire

This one is my favorite but it’d be easy enough to make one in a fabric that better matches your decor. {I’d probably still spend the $10-15 on the mesh stuff sack just to make things easy.}

Bruce always likes to sleep in our laundry anyway {or the couch or the bed or …. wherever, actually}. When things get dirty, you take it all apart & throw it in the wash! Too cool.

September 19th

Our moving date has been scheduled! The truck & freight elevator have been reserved.

uhaul

If you’re not doing anything on Saturday, September 19th feel free to come help us move. I can promise an early morning, lots of heavy lifting, & 2 flights of stairs. Don’t all come clamoring to my inbox at once. 😉

To counterbalance the overwhelming sense of fun the morning will be, we’re planning a party. After everything is packed & moved & off the truck & put in the right spots, we’re having lunch. MomMom is making meatballs! The fridge will be stocked with adult beverages. We’ll kick back & joke about the ridiculous amounts of stairs & stuff we own.
