Clean Slate

Saturday we vanquished the gross flooring the previous owner left us. While I had already ripped up 2 rooms of carpet, there were still several rooms of disgusting left.

We chose to divide & conquer. That meant we never really worked together but it was certainly efficient.

I started in the 3rd floor back bedroom. It’s the only room to have wall-to-wall carpet that was most likely professionally installed. That mean tack strips and carpets tucked under baseboards & radiators.
DSC_1045

DSC_0690

The carpet wasn’t particularly ugly but it did feature this yummy stain.

DSC_0343

Most likely left from this air conditioner left sitting on it.
DSC_0692

I found a combination of tools helpful for ripping up tack strips & nails. The flat spade tile chisel (I think that’s what it’s called) & hammer popped the strips right up super easy. Robo Grips & needlenose pliers pulled up the nails left behind.
DSC_0043
So flattering, right? Renovation shows look like a lot of fun. Lord knows I’m a complete sucker for a good Before & After but what they often fail to mention are all the little steps in the middle. Pulling up nails one by one. Or the omnipresent spackle, sand & repeat routine. The reality is renovations aren’t incredibly glamorous. In fact, they make you incredibly hot and sweaty – the droplet of sweat rolling down your nose or into your eye kind of sweaty. /soapbox

Mid-Removal
Apparently someone felt they only had to paint/stain the outside edges of the room, not the middle.

But look at the after!
3rd Flr Back Room No Carpet

I do love a good “after.” (Can’t wait until they’re sanded & refinished!!)

DSC_0144

Meanwhile…. Rob tackled the study/future walk-in closet.
More disgusting carpet

Which had, not one!
DSC_0024

But TWO layers of carpet!!

DSC_0016

Need a closer look at that??
DSC_0022

Makes me dizzy.

The rubber backing on the older carpet had completely disintegrated into a greenish-black dust.
Backing Dust

Looks better after we vacuumed but I forgot to take a picture of that.
Closet pre-vacuuming

Of course, being the efficient machine my dear hubby is, he also tackled the 3rd floor bathroom. And better him than me.

DSC_0288

Do you see that?? It smelled as gross as it looks; like 5 years of drunken college barf were collected in the fibers. {vom!}

The previous owner LURVED carpet tiles. Literally could not get enough of them. At least it makes for easy removal.
pile of bathroom carpet tiles

Found an interesting choice of flooring under said stinky carpet.

That’s right, industrial looking laminate tiles edged with white ceramic shower tiles.

DSC_0039

Klassy.

I worked on the 2nd floor hallway, where there were MORE carpet tiles.

starting 2nd floor hallway

But they’re super quick to take up, as it’s just friction keeping them in place.

2nd floor hall mid carpet removal

See? All done! No sweating required.

2nd floor hall no carpet

Then I just worked my way down the stairs pulling off all the plastic tread protectors.

Staircase mid plastic removal
(No before or after for that, just a halfway pic. Too boring for much attention.)

The foyer was also covered with – you guessed it! – carpet tiles.
Foyer mid-removal

These were stuck down with adhesive though. They peeled up easy enough but the paint underneath was all bubbly & malleable.

DSC_0093

DSC_0098

You can certainly tell what was covered and what wasn’t:

DSC_0088

Guess cleaning really wasn’t a strong suit here.

If you’re keeping count, that’d be carpet tiles in the:

  • Foyer
  • 2nd floor hallway
  • 3rd floor hallway
  • 2nd floor front room
  • 3rd floor bathroom

LOVED. Carpet tiles.

The largest single floor removal happened in the living & dining rooms.

Laminate floors before

DSC_0273

The previous owner laid down laminate wood looking floor over the hardwood.

Starting to remove laminate

Once Rob got an edge up, it was smooth sailing. The laminate was laid on a backer layer, which was on top of a layer of plastic.

Pulling up laminate in living room

The whole day was a dust fest. But for some reason, Bruce didn’t want to wear his protection.

Bruce with a mask

Brucen says no mask.

DSC_0128

Interestingly enough, the laminate was almost the same color the hardwoods are painted.

No more laminate "wood"!

We still need to get all the debris out; deciding between renting a dumpster & calling 1-800-Got-Junk. TBD on that.

But, other than that, everything is up and the floors are ready for the refinishers to come. We decided it’s worth the money to pay a professional floor refinisher.

We toyed with the idea of doing the floors ourself. My friend Kim‘s husband refinished their floors and they look amazing. But frankly, it just looks like A LOT of work. We did the math and have 1,335 sqft of floors on 3 different levels to refinish, PLUS 2 staircases. They’ll probably have to be sanded multiple times (DUST!), stained, then coated with 3 layers of poly. Also, those floor sanders are heavy and we’d have to move them up and down the stairs. No thank you.

Everything comes down to time & money. Sure doing it ourselves would be cheaper but, for us, paying a professional is worth not having the aggravation. We’re paying for their expertise; they have the right tools & know-how. And – POOF – it’ll be done. Hopefully we’ll get cracking on it this week (more to come on that). But at least the floors are now ready.

Thanks Dad!

Our dads have been a HUGE help with the house so far. They bring such knowledge, insight, and skill to our projects. We’d be in way over our head without them.

So here’s to dads!

THIS. IS. SPARTA!!!

We (and by “we,” I mean “Rob”) came across a new toy today. It came home with us under the guise that it’d be helpful for removing the kitchen floor tiles & remaining laminate gunk downstairs.

DSC_0021

In reality, it came home with us because it was fun to thrust in the air and yell “THIS IS SPARTA!!!!”

DSC_0024

Behold the 4″ floor scraper. Probably not 1000% necessary but certainly a good time.

THIS. IS. SPARTA!!!!!! RAAAHHHHHHH!!

4th Bedroom Revealed

Until Tuesday, the 4th bedroom was mostly a mystery. When we first looked at the house, the room was locked and we weren’t allowed in it. We were told the 2nd & 3rd floors were the same layout, so seeing the front room on the 2nd floor was just like seeing the front room on the 3rd floor.

This is as far as we got.
DSC_1058

In fact, we put an offer on the house without ever seeing the 4th bedroom. The 4th bedroom was that of the current tenant* and the previous owner didn’t want to disturb her. So much so that it wasn’t until the inspection that we were actually allowed into the mysterious 4th bedroom. Kinda weird, right?! We thought so too.

C’est la vie. All’s well that ends well. It is what it is. {Insert whatever other corny phrase you can think of here.}

While we closed May 29th, our tenant didn’t move out until June 16th. She needed more time and we were starting renovations in the basement garden apartment anyway.

This week we finally got all her stuff out and were able to take some real “Before” pics.

From the hall entrance:
master: view from entry

master: facing street w/ flash

master: stage-right, house left wall

Before continuing to the back wall of the room, lets take a quick detour into the closet (the doorway without a door).
DSC_0308

Is that another door I see?? Why yes. Yes it is.
Closet

Remember the view from the hall??
DSC_1058
This is what the door at the very end of the hall looks like from the opposite side.

What is up with all the gross carpet!?
Disgusting Carpet

Facing the opposite direction:

Closet: from back wall facing street

Ok. Back to the bedroom.

Closet, looking into room

You leave the closet and see:

From closet looking into room

To your left:

master: facing back of house

Have you counted the number of doorways in this room?? That’d be 5, granted one of them is a closet and another doesn’t have a door; but that’s still 5 separate doorways. I feel like that’s a lot for 1 bedroom.

Master with doors open

While you’re looking at this wall… I’m thinking about tearing it down and starting over. Perhaps closets for the other room on the back of it but add about 2′ to this bedroom. We don’t really need closets there for this bedroom (since we have what will become a walk-in closet). We’ll see. I haven’t sketched anything out yet. And when I briefly mentioned knocking out another wall, the hubs asked “when are we going to just respect the architecture of the building?” I’m not sure he thinks living in dust and chaos is as much fun as I do.

But here’s the mystery room!!  TA-DA!!!!!

I finally have a picture of our 6th mantel.

Fireplace

*For the record, we really did like our tenant. Yeah, it was kinda weird buying a house with someone living in it and only seeing this room once before now. But she’s really nice and normal. Luckily she only moved 2 doors down, so maybe we can hang out sometime.

10 years Today

I know you’re not supposed to keep counting your dating anniversaries after you get married but I blatantly disregard that.

10 years ago today, we were sitting on his parents couch, watching the Woody Allen film Deconstructing Harry. (We thought we were SO cool.) I turned to my future husband and eloquently asked, “Will you go out with me?” Ah, what a wordsmith I was at the tender age of 16.

carrie rob 2-pola

Weren’t we cute? This picture was actually taken 2 days before I popped the question. (And a big shout out to our dear friend Erin who took this now legendary picture.)

10 years (that’s a DECADE, people! A DECADE!!), 2 engagements (long story), and 2 weddings later:
DSC_0327
Look how far we’ve come!

In July, we’ve got a little camera time scheduled with the one and only Kamila Harris. The picture above is pretty much the only current pic we have of the 2 of us and it was rigged up with a poker case, cookbook & some brochures on the back of our trunk, courtesy of the camera timer.

DSC_0329
I wasn’t kidding. We can do better than that.

But more immediately, tonight we will be taking a break from ripping up carpet to veg on the couch and snuggle the dog.  We’re renting Deconstructing Harry in honor of the occasion.

DSC_0319

Happy anniversary, babe! Here’s to another few decades.

Houston, We have Blogroll!

As per Dalton‘s request, there is now a list of my favorite blogs on the left navigation bar. If you pop out of your reader, you’ll see it below the calendar.

This list is by no means comprehensive. I’m working on adding to it. My google reader sports about 190 different subscriptions. (Yeah; it’s a problem.) I tried to pull the house renovating relevant ones and then a few of my personal favorites.

If you have a blog that would make a great addition to the list, please comment! Whether you own it or it’s just one at the top of your list of daily “must reads”, I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks for reading!! 🙂

Pride Parade 2009

I now bring you the first installation of a little category called “Locally Newark,” which features fun things happening around our pretty awesome city.

Sunday, June 14th, we took a little break from massive renovations to support our neighbors and community pride. Gay pride, that is.

DSC_0160

Like my flags?? I whipped them up Sunday morning before we headed over.

DSC_0171

(Boy does our railing need to be scraped and re-painted.)

DSC_0170

Got a few pictures of them before heading out and giving them away to fellow parade watchers who were without any rainbow.

DSC_0166

Even Bruce the dog was sporting rainbow.

Perhaps it was too much rainbow for a straight couple at the pride parade??

Is there really such a thing as too much rainbow?

Oh wait, have you seen our 1st floor? Yes. Yes there is such a thing as too much rainbow.

DSC_0167

And yes, our dog does have a mohawk. Fluffy little boy dogs need manly, manly haircuts.

After the parade, there was a festival.

More rainbows!!

DSC_0202

DSC_0183

Yeah, I’m wearing a matching headband. What?!

Oh! I didn’t get a picture of it, but the hubs had a rainbow arm band too. That’d be:

  • 1 rainbow headband
  • 1 rainbow armband
  • 1 rainbow neckerchief (that’s a weird word actually spelled out)
  • 2 rainbow flags (which were given away)

OK. Ok. We’ve already established I went a little rainbow happy. But what do you expect when I have yards of this fabulous rainbow fabric just sitting around begging to be used and  – WHOMP! – here comes the Pride Parade. If nothing else, I dress for the occasion.

DSC_0213

Then we grabbed a quick lunch at a local cafe.
DSC_0208

It was a fun late morning/early afternoon.

But then we went to Home Depot. Cause if it’s a weekend, we’re at Home Depot.

And now back to your regularly scheduled renovating.

Drywall the First

Saturday was the first day we actually put up drywall, instead of ripping it down. And by “we”, I mean my dear husband, his father, & his cousin. I was off gallivanting with one of my bestest friends doing a little shopping for a certain white dress (ooooOOOOOooooo). Perhaps even finding THE ONE?!? Only time will tell. /tangent

So while I was driving all over the eastern seaboard, the men were doing manly work. Of course, construction can never begin without a little more demo, so a little more drywall was removed.

Friday Fun: We have paint!!

Am I a bad blogger for taking the weekend off?? Probably. Well I’m back now with lots of fun updates!! I’m also back-dating these posts so they stay on the dates that we actually did the work.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Friday, I went shopping. My awesome dad had a 30% off coupon at MAB paint, so we went a little hog-wild and got everything needed for the garden apt. That would be 10 gallons & 1 quart of paint. Seems like a lot for a 500sqft space but that’s what the math says we need.

I spent what felt like an eon picking out paint colors. I’m sure the sales associate loved watching me agonizing between Bittersweet Stem, Colony Buff, & Beach House.

We walked out with:

  • 2 gals of Concrete Paint in Bittersweet Stem
  • 1 gal Navajo White in eggshell finish
  • 3 gals of Classic White in eggshell finish
  • 2 gals of Classic White in semi-gloss finish
  • 2 gals Primer
  • 1 qt Latex high gloss enamel

How will it all be used??

The walls of the main room will be Classic White in the eggshell finish with baseboards and other trim in semi-gloss Classic White. The concrete floors in the kitchen and main room will be painted Bittersweet Stem.

The back wall of the kitchen (the one we ripped out) will be Navajo White with the soon-to-be-painted white cabinets. The quart of white enamel will be used to paint the black fridge white.

The bathroom walls will be Navajo White with white fixtures (tub, surround, vanity, toilet). Our (free!) tile floor is Keyera Beige.

It’s a very neutral color palatte. I tried to scan in the paint chips but the scanner isn’t cooperating. Boo! You’ll just have to wait for in-progress pics.
