Right now…

This is what we’re doing:

Taking down the sound proofing!

Coming down

We actually started Saturday (hence the pics) but then went to see some fireworks, so we didn’t get very far.

starting to come down

I wasn’t sure what we’d do with huge piles of these things but luckily, they stack.

Carrie stacking

If you have any use for them, let me know! They’re coming down pretty cleanly. The adhesive sticks more to the wall than the tiles (not so lucky for us).

We’ll be putting them on Craigslist once they’re all down. We hope someone can get use out of them, otherwise they’ll just be recycled.

Isn’t this how you’d spend your vacation?!

My New Toy!

Now that the floors are finished, we’re starting to prep for painting. I have a feeling the prep work will take longer than actually painting but having a good foundation is crucial.

While we had the treads of the staircases refinished, we plan on painting the risers white. The treads are currently looking brand-spankin’ new.

The risers…. not so much.

To remedy this problem, I needed a new toy. Rob got a new toy, now it’s my turn!

Wall of Awesome

I know a bunch of you check out our progress from your readers. But if you could pop out of them for just a second, I’d like to draw your eye to our latest feature – The Wall of Awesome.

While we are big fans of comic books, we’re not superheros and this reno is going to be a team effort. We could not do this renovation on our own. “The Wall of Awesome” is out little way to honor our friends and family who take time out of their schedules to help us with the house. Thank you! Ya’ll rock!! (and yes, even this jersey girl can use “ya’ll”)

If YOU want your name emblazened on the interwebs in all it’s bloggy goodness, come help us out! We’ll even feed you.

Happy Birthday, America!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful 4th of July!

We are heading to Hoboken in hopes of seeing the Macy’s fireworks. They’re being set off in the Hudson river this year. We’ve got chairs-in-a-bag (think soccer mom or camping staples) so we can just plop down whereever. High hopes of seeing a fantastic show. If you’re in the area, hit me up! We can watch together (twitter = carriegrace).

Last night we went to a birthday/July 4th party and had an awesome time. It was great catching up with people we haven’t seen in a while. Plus there were fireworks!!

Here are some iPhone pics from last night’s show:

Priorities

How is it July already?! The summer seems to be flying by.

After getting the floors finished and it already being July, we decided it’s time to revisit our giant TO DO list. Is our current list still in the right order or have our priorities changed? In no particular order, here are the big ticket items we’re looking at:

TO DO:

  • Paint floors 1-3
  • Finish basement apartment
  • Fix soffit & clear out gutters
  • Fix back retaining wall
  • Redo backyard landscaping
  • Fix front steps & masonry
  • Redo kitchen
  • Redo both upstairs bathrooms
  • Replace all (20) windows

While the kitchen & bathrooms aren’t great, they are working. In so much that the water runs, toilets flush, fridge keeps stuff cool and the oven gets hot. They’re not pretty but I think they’re taking a back seat to some more pressing issues.

We plan on painting ourselves, so that stays on the list. Well to be perfectly honest, we plan on prepping & priming everything and painting all the trim (semi-gloss white). We’ll live with the all white walls until we have time to think about decorating.

We also hope to to fix the back soffit ourselves. What’s wrong with the back soffit?

back soffit

Yeah. That.

I’d be surprised if we didn’t have squirrels living in our attic. I’ve already lived with squirrels in one attic (back in college) and don’t plan on repeating the experience.

The back retaining wall and front steps are both HUGE projects that will probably require contractors with mechanical assistance.

The back retaining wall has a large crack in it and is leaning toward the house.

retaining wall

The rise front steps aren’t even and tilt (therefore, drain) toward the house. It’s not blatantly noticeable – until it rains.

I’d suspect they’ll have to remove the front steps and put them back angled a little differently. The backyard is only accessible through our house or the garden apartment. Perhaps it’d be easiest on us if we weren’t living there with no steps.

In regards to windows, all but 1 of the thermal seals are popped. According the the previous tenant, it gets pretty drafty in the winter. Plus there are federal tax credits for energy efficiency. According to EnergyStar.gov, tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, in 2009 & 2010 (for existing homes only). $5000 worth of windows would max out that tax credit.

So that’s where we are now; Windows vs. Masonry.

(Sorry this isn’t the most interesting post. It’s more for personal clarification than entertainment.)

Go Newark Restaurant Week!

go newark restaurant week

Next week is Newark Restaurant Week!!

Perfect timing too! Rob & I are taking next week off to work on the house and then go down the shore for a little.

31 different restaurants will participating. From the looks of it, most are offering either a prix-fixe menu or percentage off. Click here for the list of participating restaurants. I think this just the incentive to check out a place we’ve never been to before.

Don’t forget to download the savings pass! You’ll be SOL without it.

Any recommendations of places we simply must check out??

Before the Poly

The stain went down after they finished day 2 of sanding (last Thursday).

It was the very last thing they did before leaving and they stained their way out of the house (top to bottom, back to front, right out the front door).

I stopped by after work to take a peak. Of course things were still drying, so I only peered in from the front door.

Success!

We have stools!!

5, 24″ stainless steel stools are currently sitting in the back of our car. They’re not as distressed as I thought by the original picture but that’s not bad thing. The finish is very similar to that on our appliances.

I’m not exactly sure where we’ll use them. But I have a habit of buying, or rather acquiring, furniture that doesn’t yet have an ‘assigned seat.’

For example, my parents have an industrial fan that I picked up at a yard sale and planned on turning into a coffee table. That’s still the plan but it’s been decorating their garage for 4(?) years. The industrial multi-drawer cabinet I rescued from the curb and a pair of old windows keep it company.

Rob’s parents are equally awesome. We found a set of mannequin legs at a yard sale and I thought they’d make a killer floor lamp. Not only do they let us keep the legs in their garage, my awesome father-in-law wired it for me!

We don’t use only our parents for storage though! A 6′ costume rolling rack found (for free!!) on craigslist is currently taking up residence in the foyer of our apartment. It’s come in pretty handy for hanging the dry cleaning on when we walk in the door.

I’m almost positive we have enough furniture to fill the whole new house. Granted, it’s spread across 3 homes but it won’t be for long. Somehow I don’t think our parents will mind the room in their garages.

Our newly acquired stools are heading straight to the house (the first pieces moved in, actually). Do not pass through the apartment. Do not collect $200.

Welcome home little buddies!!

Road Trip!!

It is 9:30pm and I’m typing this from my iPhone.

About an hour ago I was passively trolling around craigslist and came across an ad for 5 “totally cool” stainless steel stools. They certainly looked “totally cool” from the smallish pic attached to the post.

A few emails back and forth with the seller. He said he could come down in price if we got them ASAP. I said $75 and we could come tonight or tomorrow. He agreed and we hopped in the car.

Our trusty Garmin (Thanks rents!! Awesome gift) says we’ll be there at 10:22pm.

BTW!! Did you know you can change the voice of the Garmin? And did you further know that one of the options is “British English”? It’s pretty much “totally cool”.

Stain Color??

Yesterday I told you what we picked for the top coat but I suppose it might be nice to know what exactly went on BEFORE the poly. Right? Well deal.

Timeline so far:
Wednesday
: first day of sanding & we picked the stain color.
Thursday
: finished sanding & stained.
Friday, Saturday & Monday each got a coat of poly.

Our 2 refinishing posts generated the most feedback ever!! It was awesome to hear everyone’s opinion. I loved it.

In total, we had at least 24 different people (20 here and 4 on my facebook) pick 37 different colors (many people suggested multiple colors). It was SO interesting to see the results! I was honestly a little surprised.

The clear front runner was Gunstock, choice #5, coming in with 11 votes.
5: Gunstock

Option #4 (Puritan Pine) came in second with 7 votes:
4: Puritan Pine

The Golden’s tied for third place. Golden Oak (#2) & Golden Pecan (#6) both getting 6 votes:
#2: Golden Oak

6: Golden Pecan

Our darkest choice, Dark Walnut (option #1), came in fourth with 4 votes:
#1: Dark Walnut

In last place, with a mere 3 votes, was color choice #3 (Provincial):
#3: Provincial

And

the

winner

is:
*
*
*
*
*
*
Oh, you want to know?!
*
*
*
*
*
*
Really??
*
*
*
Ok.

The underdog, the ugly duckling, choice #3, PROVINCIAL!

Provincial!!

VOILA!

This picture was taken from the front door after the first coat of poly. The newly refinished floors make the paint look like crap, so I’m gonna need you to use your imagination.

On the staircase, you probably noticed that only the treads (part you walk on) were refinished. The risers (vertical part) are going to be painted white. The baseboards & trim will be semi-gloss white. We haven’t figured out wall color yet but it’s safe to say they won’t be staying red. The plan is to prime everything white, do the trim & paint the wall color as we decorate.

How’d we pick??

We wanted something that would compliment the banister (which needs a good dusting from the looks of that picture).

Also, my top picks were #2 (Golden Oak), #3 (Provincial), & #4 (Puritan Pine). Rob’s favorites were #3 (Provincial) & #5 (Gunstock). So we chose the one we both liked – Provincial.

It seems most people liked the red. Sorry! Hope you’re not disappointed. 🙂

We’re really pleased with the results. More pics to come as soon as we can walk on it!!

So, what do you think?
