In an effort to save some cash, I canceled the TV and phone service.
YUP! Brick City Love is now television free.
Cablevision should be proud of their training personnel. The girl I spoke with in cancellations was throwing everything in the script at me and probably a couple things that weren’t in the script.
After 10 minutes trying to convince the young representative that I really did want to cancel and no amount of cajoling or new promotions was going to make me change my mind {unless they were going to throw it in for FREE}, we had this little exchange –
Confused Cablevision Representative: Wait. You don’t want TV at ALL?!??
Me: Nope. Not at all.
Representative: BUT HOW ARE YOU GOING TO WATCH TV??!
Me: Um. . . . . The Internet??
You can do that now.
She finally canceled the televisions & phone packages.
And my bill has been reduced to a flat rate of $49.95.
We only ever had the phone service because it was the ‘Triple Play’ promotion and having it {combined with TV & internet} actually saved us money. There was never a phone plugged in, nor did we even know the number!
I’ve been surfing over to Channel 131 to get my True Blood fix, ESPN for the World Cup games, and Hulu for most everything else. It’s been liberating not having television. Of course I’m can still completely sucked down the rabbit hole by the never ending internet but so far so good.
Do you have TV? Ever consider canceling it?

We don’t have television service either! We plug our laptop into the T.V. and watch everthing we want on Hulu and Netflix and love it!
Oh I wish I could…Wade would probably gouge my eyes out though. I could deal with just netflix and internet…but since oour internet here is junk Hulu runnins at uber slow speed of snail and constantly reloads itself. Nothing like watching a show with the little spinning circle right in the middle. You are braver than I…

we don’t have tv.
i take that back. we don’t have tv that we pay for. no cable, no dish, none of that. we do have a set of $15 rabbit ears that sit on top of our tv, and get all the broadcast channels except fox.
we have a television set for enhanced netflix viewing–much better on the 27″ screen than on a laptop. (27″ is still pretty modest, too!) we also watched the winter olympics–i think that may have been the reason we got the rabbit ears in the first place.
excluding movies, watching tv has never been a big part of my life, and i’m glad that it will continue that way. =)
The AT&T Uverse rep was the same way with me when I said I wanted to cancel cable (along with the HD package + DVR we were signed up for) and only keep internet. And when I told people that we were getting rid of cable, they could hardly believe it. I was just thinking the other day how I love not having a cable bill and I don’t miss the channels at all.

Good for you! Honestly, I think about it all the time — my cable bill is massive. I’d love to be able to hook my computer right up to my tv so I can play the shows from my computer onto it. Just have to figure out how to work it.
We don’t have a TV either! If you have an HD tuner built into your TV (most TVs do these days…or you can buy a separate HD tuner), and if you put an antenna on your roof and point it in the right direction (use AntennaWeb.org), you can pull down the major networks in HD for FREE!!! You’ll still have to get your ESPN, HBO, or HGTV fix elsewhere, but you can at least watch the usual suspects in sharp HD!
I did a post about it here. We even bought a TiVo off eBay (still with a year’s subscription) so we can record shows. I HIGHLY recommend doing this since you’re in a metropolitan area where you’ll get a lot of channel choices!

We have had basic cable (just the networks & PBS) for 4 years. The cost is negligible since we have to have cable for internet. We have not had a phone for well over 6 years. We don’t miss the cable channels AT ALL. We have the internet and mostly we do other things. TV just sucks up all of your time. We have saved a ridiculous amount of money by not having phone and cable TV.
My husband grew up most of his life without a TV at all. Even when they did get a TV, it was only used for watching movies (mostly 60s Sci-Fi and 3 Stooges – blech!). On the other hand, I grew up with cable.
When we first got married, we kept a tiny 13″ TV, we got free from my parents, in our basement. We would drag it upstairs whenever we rented a movie. After I got tired of that, we kept it in the living room, but still couldn’t get much reception other than two very snowy channels. When we bought our house (almost four years ago), a coworker gave us her 25″ tube TV when she upgraded to a flat screen. We got Netflix, and videos were still the main thing we watched. That was UNTIL the digital upgrade. With our digital converter box and rabbit ears, we can pull in a good amount of stations, all crystal clear (except for when helicopters fly overhead). Now during TV season, we watch at least one show per weeknight! Most recently, we got another free behemoth of a TV – a 35-inch tube and have been catching up on the first three seasons of Mad Men… Now we desperately need to find a friend who has cable, so we can “hang out with them” on Sunday nights for Season four!
Okay, now I’ll shut up.
Way to go! What a difference in a bill. We never hooked up cable or dish. We aren’t home nearly enough to justify it. I used to watch more shows online, but I don’t even have much time for that lately. So, it’s definitely not worth the money. I think more folks are getting to this point.
I’ve only had basic cable for about two years now. When I can replace my computer with a newer model, cable will be exiting stage left.
Another great website to check out is Project Free TV. I can’t remember the URL, but if you google its name and whatever episode/show/season you’re trying to find, it’ll pop right up. You’d be amazed at some of the obscure shows I’ve found that way.
When we moved to Newark, we didn’t sign up for cable. We took my PC and hooked it up to our flat screen. It worked out quite well.
Between Hulu and Netflix streaming, we’re never lacking entertainment, and we get our news fix in the morning and evening via NPR (which is SO much better and thorough than TV news!). If we really wanted the network channels, we could just buy a good antennae. There are tons of channels in the greater NYC area.
I didn’t have television for over 10 years. However, when my gadget-loving, media-loving boyfriend moved in with me about a year ago, we got television. Mostly because he works for Comcast, and gets all of their services and the triple-play for dirt cheap. But we have both agreed: if he ever leaves Comcast, we’re getting rid of the television and home phone. Neither one of us can BELIEVE how much those services cost for non-employees. It’s ridiculous.
That is great! We have internet + basic cable for $50 a month…it gives us digital channels like public tv, networks, weather channel, and bravo. Maybe you could check into that if you wanted the basics? We go to Hulu and netflix for everything else, it is very liberating!
We just cancelled phone and cable this week and bumped up our bandwith. We cut our bill in half. We love using Netflix on the playstation 3 and plugging our computer up to the tv to watch other shows on Hulu and other sites like it. We could never find anything on cable ever. Glad to see we aren’t the only ones to get rid of cable.
Good for you! My family (husband, myself, 7 & 6 year old) do not have cable, home phone………or……internet (for 6 years now). I know shocking! No one can believe it. Sometimes we think about getting them, but we like not spending the money…….and I dont worry about my kids zoning watching TV all day.

I got rid of cable back around 2003. I never really watched much TV, and I hate commercials, so I just watch what I want online, or by download it.
